Updated: Apr 13, 2021

What are social skills and why do we need them?

Social skill also called Interpersonal skills are very important in the workplace. You might see sometimes on resumes people saying they have strong interpersonal skills. This means they are good at both verbal (speaking) and nonverbal skills (your body language and eye contact). Employees always want these skills because they want a pleasant working environment and no drama!! Also you may have to work on projects where it is important to get along with other team members,

  1. Empathy - this means you can understand how others are feeling. You can put yourself in their shoes. This is important since you need to be able to let others know you care about their concerns and are there to help solve issues.

  2. Cooperation - You need to be able to cooperate with others especially if you are in a job where you work on a team. You are always required to work alongside your colleagues for the good of the organization and to reach goals set out by the organization.

  3. Verbal and Written Communication - This is the skill to be able to speak very well (verbal) in order to communicate to your colleagues and managers. Also required to speak on the phone and be a professional representative of the organization. Also written communication is needed as you will be writing emails, letters, reports or will need to give a presentation.

  4. Listening - People like to communicate with those who are willing to listen to them. This is an important skill as your employer will be telling you what needs to be done and you must be able to listen carefully and understand what is required of you.

  5. Nonverbal Communication - nonverbal cues like body language is easy to misunderstand. For example if someone is talking to you do you turn around and give full eye contact and smile or do you keep your back turned and talk over your shoulder? These are nonverbal cues. Do you smile and are agreeable when asked to do something or do you roll your eyes and take a deep sigh? (Not a good idea)
